Climate change also poses major and new challenges for transport. Cities are already increasingly confronted with extreme weather. In the case of heavy rain, severe flooding can occur locally \u2013 with corresponding effects on traffic \u2013 making it all the more important to be prepared for this in the future. This is precisely where the SENSARE pilot project comes in: the real-time warning system measures the current water level with various sensors on the roads, in the canal system as well as in manhole covers. These sensors pass the data on to a digital platform where the values are compared with previously created simulations. Here, emergency services, infrastructure companies and the city administration can view this information in good time. SENSARE thus improves the ability to act in the event of sudden flooding and thus significantly strengthens the transport of the future.<\/p>\n

Adaptive City Mobility (ACM): The e-mobility solution for urban fleet operators<\/h3>

Worldwide, fleet operators of electric vehicles are struggling with a number of challenges, including a lack of affordable and clean mobility, range limitation of vehicles or excessive costs for upgrading the power grid. The ACM project has developed a holistic e-mobility system as a solution approach for fleet operators in cities: a multifunctional B2B fleet vehicle can be rented by several fleet customers via the ACM sharing platform as well as used in different applications such as taxi, sharing, logistics and tourism. Through B2B sharing, ACM replaces private vehicles in cities. The energy solution used ties in with the existing infrastructure of cities \u2013 which is why the electric vehicles can be used immediately around the world without the need for further expansion of the power grid.<\/p>\n

Simple, convenient and environmentally friendly \u2013 \u201con-demand mobility for the Frankfurt\/Rhine-Main region\u201d combines classic public transport with offers of digitally driven, new mobility. It thus creates real added value for the passenger: gaps in public transport services are closed with emission-free vehicles and more sustainable mobility is made possible. This means that up to 1.8 million people in the metropolitan region will receive an environmentally friendly and digital supplement to public transport on the first and last mile. The project enables attractive, digital public transport in suburban and rural areas and thereby reduces NO2 production.<\/p>\n

Association-wide mobile station network in the Rhineland<\/h3>

For more and more municipalities, mobile stations are the first step towards solving transport problems. By connecting at least two or more modes of transport, they make it easier to switch from one to another, thus encouraging the shift away from cars towards more environmentally friendly alternatives. The goal of accelerating the expansion of the mobile station network is made possible by Nahverkehr Rheinland (NVR) through a mobile station concept that it provides to municipalities. In cooperation with the Zukunftsnetz Mobilit\u00e4t NRW, municipalities are supported and enabled to plan and implement their own mobile stations through coordination, advice, information offers and resources (workshops, framework contracts for equipment elements, etc.). Uniform standards are used and funding is made available. In autumn 2022, the 100th mobile station will be opened through this holistic approach \u2013 and it is already being adapted by other special-purpose associations in North Rhine-Westphalia.<\/p>\n

Multimodal mobility solutions Urban mobility occasionally reaches its capacity limits. In order to avoid high CO2 and noise emissions in the future and also to ensure safety and a low land consumption of mobility, we have to rethink the way we get around. In the UMPARKEN project, eight households swap their cars for a mobility budget of 300 euros for four weeks and switch to multimodal solutions. The parking space freed up in this exchange is redesigned for alternative use in the interests of the residents. The pilot project, which saw the participation of citizens, municipalities, science, business and start-ups, provided important insights into the potentials and challenges of multimodal mobility and living without a car.<\/p>\n

In order to promote and implement a sustainable change in transport in Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg through mobility projects, the Ministry of Transport funds staff positions in various areas of sustainable mobility. The 112 currently funded positions are coordinated and networked on a topic-specific basis. The new mobility experts play a central role in project coordination and implementation of measures for sustainable mobility, digitalisation and climate protection in transport. They act as a bridge between the state and the municipalities in the transportation and implementation of the state\u2019s goals. The state-wide network thus facilitates uncomplicated networking and the transfer of knowledge between the agencies in order to effectively advance the transport transition and mobility of the future.<\/p>\n

For future-oriented mobility, there needs to be a continuous exchange of knowledge between the various stakeholders. Since July 2020, the Open-TransportMeetup (OTM) has been held fortnightly as an open, virtual ex-change event on topics related to OpenData, OpenSource, interfaces in the public transport and mobility sector. Invited experts present their pro-jects, standards, current developments or solutions and answer questions afterwards. Depending on the topic, 20-30 participants come from areas such as administration, public transport companies, research & teaching, start-ups, mobility initiatives and associations. The OTM makes initiatives, projects and standards that promote reuse and dissemination visible, links actors with each other and facilitates the exchange of experiences across the board.<\/p>\n

The MaaS L.A.B.S project opens interaction spaces for people, innovative technologies and knowledge repositories with its Living Labs in medium-sized cities, such as Potsdam, Cottbus or Siegen. The aim is to support the development of well-informed, data-safe and environmentally friendly mobility as well as social urban development through various actions and events. In the Living Labs, for example, on-demand transport systems, mobility apps or peer-to-peer sharing technologies are tested under real conditions. Role-playing games for all age groups ensure the entertaining transfer of knowledge about complex ecosystems of digital mobility and invite discussion about the mobility of the future.<\/p>\n

eFarm: Hydrogen from North Friesland<\/h3>

Pragmatic, Nordic, green: the eFarm joint project initiated by GP JOULE is located in the district of North Friesland. The largest sustainable hydrogen mobility project in Germany relies on regeneratively produced, green hydrogen. The principles behind it come from agriculture, namely diversity over monoculture, optimal synergy over optimal individual use and, above all, holistic thinking: generation, distribution and use are thought of together. Hydrogen is produced from surplus wind power in five electrolysers. Two filling stations supply two fuel cell buses and 30 cars. About 3,000 people are involved in the project through the 20 shareholders. The eFarm shows us that community-based, sustainable management is possible and that emission-free, local transport benefits everyone \u2013 both people and the environment.<\/p>\n

The idea that waterways are important building blocks in the transport transition is still given insufficient attention. They are more flexible and cheaper compared to bridges, can combine a range of mobility offers \u2013 from e-scooters to CargoBikes \u2013 in an intermodal way and are barrier-free and family-friendly. Unleash Future Boats forms this missing link in the mobility chain with Mobility-on-Demand by water. The innovative ecosystem around electric, autonomous boats and ships includes many components: propulsion kits of electric systems including fuel cells and green hydrogen, autonomous and emission-free passenger and cargo transport on water, a fully digital emission-free port with autonomous boats and ships, and a European test and validation centre for autonomous shipping. The network behind Unleash Future Boats consists of more than 37 international partners from business, industry, politics and academia who have a clear mission: to advance the waterborne transport revolution using a radical approach.<\/p>\n

e.Volution: The commuter shuttle system<\/h3>

e.Volution is a shuttle system for commuters that reduces car traffic at peak times. Employers can make it available to their employees for free rides. The corporate shuttle combines increasing commuter traffic, space saving, energy saving and C02 reduction, while at the same time offering people an individualised, comfortable and flexible driving experience. If it is possible to transport an average of five people to work in the shuttles, which can hold up to seven people, the system will mean five private cars are no longer on the roads. This will save 80 per cent space and reduce C02 emissions by 25 per cent. The META shuttle is a barrier-free electric Circular Economy vehicle that has an especially long service life and was developed in such a way that its production is extremely resource efficient. In the start-up phase, e.Volution is cooperating with Telekom at the Bonn site, with the Aachen city region at the Merzbr\u00fcck site, with the Coesfeld district in M\u00fcnsterland and with the city of Bochum at the Mark 51\u00b07 site (formerly the Opel plant).<\/p>\n

Leipzig\u2019s cityscape is densely populated and diverse. The Neue N\u00e4hen \u2013 SUPERBLOCKS Leipzig project aims to reduce Leipzig\u2019s traffic (socio-economically). This goes hand in hand with the plan to reclaim the street space as public space and to create safe traffic routes in addition to green spaces without any motorized individual traffic. Residents of Leipzig, as well as the administration, politics and science, are invited to accompany and help shape the process of traffic reduction in Leipzig. Neue N\u00e4hen \u2013 SUPERBLOCKS Leipzig creates a blueprint for further initiatives in the city and for the active implementation of the traffic turnaround.<\/p>\n

DatEnKoSt: Data-based decisions for cost-effective road maintenance<\/h3>

The maintenance of transport routes is a challenge for local and municipal governments. Some of the direct consequences of not keeping up with this maintenance are hazardous situations, accident costs and delivery delays. The research project \u201cDatEnKoSt \u2013 Data-based decisions for cost-effective road maintenance\u201d is developing an inexpensive and reliable condition assessment of traffic routes. Continuous road recording using smartphones in municipal vehicles will enable the permanent monitoring of road conditions. Image and sensor data are used as a basis, which can derive the road condition by means of artificial intelligence. The project enables damage to be detected at an early stage, road construction measures to be planned efficiently and proactive rehabilitation management to be made possible.<\/p>\n

Under the label MobiData BW, the public transport company Nahverkehrsgesellschaft Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg mbH (NVBW) has been operating a data and service portal on behalf of the state of Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg for the bundling and publication of mobility data since September 2020. Such mobility data is collected by public institutions and private companies in Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg in a wide variety of places and formats and under assorted licenses, and is mostly used on a local basis. This data is thus located on individual, separate \u201cdata islands\u201d. This is where the Mobi Data BW project comes in: the goal is to create a network of the individual data islands and to publish this data under an open license and in standard formats. The approach is geared towards the common good, non-discriminatory and consistently oriented towards the Open Data principle.<\/p>\n

MOTIS Project: Sustainable and inclusive travel made easy<\/h3>

MOTIS is an application that makes finding sustainable connections with different modes of transport (e.g. park and ride, bike, car and e-scooter sharing and public transport) as easy as reaching for the car key. Among other things, the project is currently working on MOTIS being able to calculate barrier-free travel chains on a profile basis \u2013 this includes, for example, the exclusion of transfers if no boarding aid is available at the time of boarding or alighting. In such a case, the application figures out the best alternatives. The project is thus an important step towards providing more inclusive Mobility as a Service offers.<\/p>\n

The vision of OPENER next is to make public transport more attractive. The aim is to promote an inclusive society on the one hand and to advance a sustainable mobility revolution on the other. The project\u2019s approach is based on social cooperation, which means that citizens can contribute to recording and updating stops and their characteristics using a data collection app (OpenStop). What makes this special is that not only is the responsibility for data collection shared amongst several people, but the collection also takes place continuously and according to demand. In the spirit of \u201cfor each other\u201d, the data collected is freely available to everyone. The aim of the project is to encourage more people to use the bus and train more often.<\/p>\n

CT-1: micro mobility that transforms city traffic<\/h3>

Our cities are becoming more and more crowded, and the space available in them increasingly scarce. The German-Israeli microcar project City Transformer has developed the all-electric microcar CT-1, which takes into account the realities of inner-city traffic. CT-1 is an all-electric microcar with two seats on four wheels that can reduce its track width from 1.4 metres to 1 metre at the push of a button. This makes the CT-1 easy to park, easy to handle and a smart solution for congested inner cities with a notorious lack of parking space. In addition, fewer resources are required for its production and maintenance compared to conventional electric cars. This allows users to minimise their ecological footprint in traffic without sacrificing comfort and safety.<\/p>\n

Share.P: Inner-city parking made easy<\/h3>

The Swiss project Share.P is an innovative solution that optimises urban parking in a sustainable way. By automating the process of renting off-street parking spaces, it eliminates the unnecessary search for parking spaces while promoting the development of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The free mobile app, currently accessible in six languages, makes it easy to find and pre-book a parking space for the car or a charging station for the electric car. Unused parking spaces can be made available to the ShareP community so that the tedious search for a parking space is no longer necessary. The application is an innovative approach to solving the problem of air pollution and traffic congestion in cities.<\/p>\n

In many countries and cities, access to transport data is difficult, the quality of the available data is low or the data is not collected at all. To address this, the Transport Data Commons Initiative was jointly founded in May 2022 by 18 organisations based all over the world. The goal of the project is to capture the connection between transport and climate. At this point, the initiative is therefore initially focusing on reporting data from the transport sector that is needed to derive the sector\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions. The vision behind the project is to develop a common and open source data platform that can be accessed and used by all. Most cities lack an infrastructure that makes cycling a pleasant and comfortable transport experience. In order to promote this sustainable means of transport in a future-oriented way, it is necessary to consistently focus infrastructure construction on perceived and subjective safety. However, up to now there has been no data on precisely this. The VelObserver project therefore collects this data using a unique approach across the board and through crowdsourcing in the city of Zurich. Cyclists give their opinion on their personal feelings for different segments. In this way, over 40,000 assessments have been recorded in recent months, which also make progress visible and serve the city of Zurich as a planning basis for the further development of the bicycle network.<\/p>\n

It deals with the perspectives and themes of the region being visited. The flexible stage ship doubles as a houseboat and generates solar power, which can also be used to operate the stage equipment. Since 2017, the Traumsch\u00fcff has been touring Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for several months every summer. Many of the locations currently have no professional theatre operations of their own, so the project aims to fill this gap and supplement the existing cultural offerings. At about 30 stations, a lively exchange of energy, art and cultural practices involving the local and international participants took place. The GINT project consortium is installing and testing a new technology to provide train passengers with continuous mobile phone reception with a high bandwidth. This is based on a large number of relatively small masts that are set up at comparatively short intervals along the railway tracks. The masts are connected to fibre optic cables and linked to the data network. The aim is to provide uninterrupted mobile communications coverage for rail travellers with a high bandwidth of five gigabits (5G). The Klima-Taler app calculates how much CO2 a person avoids by travelling on foot, by bike or by public transport. To do this, it records the distances travelled and twelve different automatically recognized types of mobility. Based on average emission values and other factors, the software calculates the amount of CO2 saved. Users receive a climate token for every five kilograms they save. They can exchange this for discounts, for example in municipal theatres, museums or swimming pools as well as in local shops. The reward system is intended to motivate citizens to travel with less CO2 or completely emission-free. In addition, the analyses of the mobility data should help local authorities to align their transport and route planning with the needs of their residents.<\/p>\n

Over 475,000 participants in more than 2,800 municipalities record their cycle journeys via app – around seven million per year. The MoveOn team analyses this data and makes it available to the participating municipalities free of charge as a basic analysis. To do this, they prepare the data obtained for six application scenarios. For example, as user statistics, graphically prepared \u2018heat maps\u2019 or as an analysis of waiting times at junctions. These planning tools can be used directly via a web browser. Employees in over 700 local authorities currently use the data for local transport planning.<\/p>\n

As part of KIRA, the project team is testing autonomous public transport vehicles that comply with the Level 4 standard for autonomous driving. The tests are carried out with six autonomous shuttle vehicles operating in urban and rural areas of the city of Darmstadt and the district of Offenbach. They will travel at standard speeds in normal road traffic within a defined service area. Test users will be given the opportunity to ride along, with safety personnel on board at all times during the test. An innovative warning system has been developed at RWTH Aachen University to prevent turning accidents. What sounds paradoxical at first: it is quite inconspicuous. The lights at the side of the road are neither particularly large nor do they flash constantly. Instead, the traffic situation is recorded by thermal imaging cameras and evaluated in real time using AI. The system only activates the LED columns, which are around one metre high, if a collision is imminent. They are intended to subconsciously alert drivers to the risk and trigger appropriate behaviour at an early stage – e.g. braking, looking over the shoulder. Rail transport runs more efficiently if it is known how busy the trains are. Until now, however, there have been no systems to measure capacity utilisation comprehensively, cheaply and in real time. S-Bahn Hamburg has therefore developed DB Lightgate: a system that uses around 40,000 LED light points to illuminate trains travelling through the station and accurately record the occupancy rate of each carriage. Algorithms also determine the type of train, the number of carriages and the speed. In Hamburg, the real-time data is displayed to passengers on the platform so that they can find a free seat on the incoming train. The data helps train drivers and dispatchers to control operations. The patented system is now also used in Berlin, Leipzig, Frankfurt and Munich.<\/p>\n

Young people are rarely asked what cycling infrastructure they would like to see – even though they use it a lot. In the \u2018Meals on Wheels\u2019 project, young people examined the cycling infrastructure in their school neighbourhoods. A sensor box on the seat post automatically recorded parameters such as the distance to car traffic, cycle path quality, danger spots and much more. Together with experts from science, business and local politics, the data and the measures derived from it are now being digitally processed for the public and discussed with them at a final event. The supervised process is intended to encourage and enable young people to get involved in future spatial social development processes.<\/p>\n

Rural areas are often underserved by mobility services. The FLEX pilot project in the district of Munich offers a solution in which demand determines where and how the buses run. The route is not tied to a timetable or route; it varies freely between the boarding and alighting points in the service area. A journey is provided within 15 to 30 minutes by an algorithm that combines journey requests with similar routes. This reduces detours and avoids unnecessary journeys, which improves vehicle utilisation and ensures optimum accessibility to public transport. FLEX can be used with a valid public transport ticket at no extra charge. The project thus makes a significant contribution to sustainable and inclusive mobility.<\/p>\n

When is the new cycle path coming? Which junction has already been rebuilt? With over 900 planned, ongoing and completed cycling projects in Berlin, it’s not easy to keep track. Since 2021, a multidimensional, cloud-based database has been making work easier for those responsible. Project information can be accessed with just a few clicks and workflows can be managed digitally, which speeds up the process from funding to planning and construction. Collaboration between the state and district administrations is also simplified – and makes it transparent for the public. Selected cycling data, geodata and photos are published on an interactive map via an interface in accordance with open data principles.<\/p>\n

The city of Hamburg has committed itself to the mobility transition. As part of this, cycling is to become more attractive – safer and more convenient. The PrioBike-HH project relies entirely on digital technologies and traffic networking, which enables a bouquet of measures: green waves, green requirements, various speed recommendations for the best traffic flow, safety instructions using flashing ground lights and much more. In addition, a routing app was developed based on a digital directory of Hamburg’s cycle paths, which can also use traffic light data to calculate the speed at which cyclists will reach the next traffic light when it turns green. The project was also used to further expand Hamburg’s cycle counting network.<\/p>\n

In order to do justice to the highly emotional topic of mobility, civil society initiatives and start-ups need a place that facilitates encounters and exchanges, where people can discuss and try things out, argue and make up. This conviction gave rise to the Mobility Campus, which sees itself as a place for innovation, work and learning. Formats such as hackathons and residency programmes provide incentives to tackle the mobility challenges on site. Start-ups are supported and networked with appropriate advice. Scientific institutions and supra-regional initiatives find a place on the mobility campus where they can exchange expertise and jointly initiate and implement mobility projects.<\/p>\n

Emission free mobility around the clock in the sparsely populated but seasonally highly frequented tourist area around the Baltic Sea fjord Schlei and parts of the neighbouring coast – without having to own a car. To this end, the local public transport service has been extensively expanded to include electric express and tourist bus routes, a comprehensive electric, barrier-free on-demand service, e-car sharing, expanded bike sharing and an app that links everything together. The result is Germany’s most comprehensive local transport service in rural areas, which enables a journey to and from any location in the project region at least once an hour, day or night. SMILE24 is realising the vision of public and integrated everyday mobility – as a lever for a real, lasting modal shift.<\/p>\n

It’s easy to explain: users enter their start and destination address on the \u2018Stuttgart rideshare\u2019 platform, whereupon the system suggests suitable travel partners who then share the journey and costs. But there is more going on in the background: interfaces to public transport systems allow users to optimally combine carpooling and bus and train journeys thanks to real-time information, while the integration of map services and traffic data enables precise route calculations and adaptation to current traffic conditions. More than 2,000 employees from large institutions already use \u2018Stuttgart f\u00e4hrt mit\u2019. The aim is to establish the platform across the board and thus reduce traffic, the shortage of parking spaces and CO2 emissions as well as strengthen regional ties.<\/p>\n

In swaxi, passengers with a similar destination share the journey. This reduces individual traffic and makes travelling more sustainable. The dense virtual network of stops provides access to neighbourhoods that previously had little access to public transport. In addition, the swaxi runs in the evening and at night in particular, using cars from the car sharing fleet of Stadtwerke Augsburg, which maximises capacity utilisation. The dynamic pricing model is also remarkable: if there is a shortage of conventional local transport, the swaxi runs at the normal public transport fare, while a higher price indicates a good regular connection. A high level of customer satisfaction and the multiplication of the number of users and employees indicate the resounding success of the project.<\/p>\n
